A periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide is pumped by a red laser for high-efficiency polarization entangled photon-pair generation at a telecom wavelength. The underlying nonlinear optical process is called spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Entangled photon-pairs at a telecom wavelength are widely employed for long-distance quantum communication applications.
