Reflective optical limiter based on resonant transmission

Optical or microwave limiters transmit low-level radiation while blocking high-level electromagnetic pulses. A typical limiter absorbs most of the high-level radiation that can cause its overheating and destruction. Here we present the novel concept of a reflective photonic limiter, which reflects (rather than absorb) high-level electromagnetic pulses while it provides high transmissivity for low-level incident electromagnetic signals. The underlying physical mechanism is based on resonant transmission in the presence of a lossy non-linear defect embedded in a photonic structure
