EIT based quantum memories in atomic ensembles

Storage and read-out of non classical states of light is a critical element for quantum information networks. Simultaneous storage of two non-commuting variables carried by light and subsequent read-out is possible in atomic ensembles. We have shown that interaction of two light fields, a strong one et a very weak one with three-level systems in the EIT or Raman regime allows direct mapping of the quantum state of the weak field onto long lived coherences in the atomic ground state of atoms, without excess noise. Warm Cesium vapours and ensembles of cold trapped Cesium atoms have been used. In order to better understand the storage process, we have studied in detail electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), taking into account the hyperfine structure in the excited state. This has allowed us to identify ways to improve the characteristics of the atomic quantum memory.
