MOSAIQ just recently installed an elastodynamic experiment, where a rigid body is excited using transducers and the vibrations are detected by two other transducers. If the setup is situated in vacuum, the quality factors can range from several thousands (aluminum plates), via millions (silicium wavers) up to a billion (quartz spheres). At the moment the setup is being tested by investigating Rayleigh waves of regular cups. In the future we plan to investigate the resonances width dependance on the temperature change, related to question investigated by microwaves in the project ’Chaotic Scattering in Complex Systems’ (link to article88), combined structures of plates and slab supports often used in ship building, as well as inhomogeneous materials related to questions from geophysics.
