Development of Ln3+-doped glasses, glass-ceramics and nanomaterials for photonic applications

One of the interesting fields of contemporary research concerns the science, technology and applications of lanthanide (Ln) doped crystals, polycrystallines, glasses, glass-ceramics and nanomaterials as they play key role in our modern competitive society. In this direction, series of Ln-doped oxide and oxyfluoride glasses, glass-ceramics and nanomaterials have been prepared, characterized and optimized their optical properties. The characterized optical properties are not only useful to understand Ln-ligand-radiation interaction mechanisms but also to design laser and photonic devices for specific applications. The main focus of the presentation will be to present and discuss our recent results on optimization of host compositions and active ion (Ln) concentrations beside preparation conditions of Ln3+-doped materials for use in lasers, white light emitting devices and wave guide inscriptions. The practical difficulties to develop optical quality devices for specific applications will also be discussed.
